What is a vision board and why should I make one?

A vision board is a great tool for manifestation and visualizing what you want in life. Many people make these at the beginning of the year, but you can make one whenever you want! Use them to first get a general feeling you want to cultivate or vision you want to see come to life. Once you have this, you can use it as a jumping off point to create goals! Or the other way around - you can start with goals that you want to accomplish and then create your vision board to help you stay motivated so you can see your “why” behind your goals.

Types of Vision Boards

First of all, there are different types of vision boards! Some people make digital ones, and then there are various types of physical ones. I personally prefer a physical vision board so I can hang it up where I can see it and to make it more of a craft away from my computer.

For a digial vision board, you would start with a blank document (docs, canva, etc.) and then search for various images online based on what you want to include in your vision board. This option is great if you know what you want to include on your vision board, but I find it can be challenging to be more fluid and open to random ideas and pictures you might be drawn to. On the other hand, you might be able to find better pictures of what you want online if you know what you’re searching for.

For physical vision boards, I’ve done 2 types - one on a poster board, and one on a cork board. I find the poster board one to be one time use and is great if you’re just exploring the idea of a vision board. I personally now use a cork board since I make them regularly (at least once a year now). I like that the cork board vision board can be more of an ever evolving piece throughout the year and I find it to be more aesthetic!

Vision Board Supplies

For the poster board one, you will need:

  • Poster board / foam board

  • Glue to attach items

For the cork board one, you will need

  • Cork board

  • Decorative pushpins

Finally, for the contents of your vision board! There are a few options

  • Magazines

    • Save ones you get in the mail

    • Go to a thrift store

    • Bookstore like Barnes & Noble

    • Online retailer if you know what you’re looking for

  • Vision Board Book

    • These are kind of nice because you have curated images specific for a vision board and are nice to be able to just look through and see what calls to you in the moment!

  • Fancy paper for backgrounds

  • Your own pictures or pictures from online that you print

How To Guide

If you want a step by step guide, these are how you can break it down! Otherwise, I’ve also just looked through images and when something jumps out at me or calls to me, then I just cut out that picture and gather them all together and usually one or more themes emerge.

  1. Consider different vision categories and/or wellness categories that are most important to you right now!

    • Examples: Personal, Professional / Career, Community, Learning, Health, Wellbeing, Fitness, Financial, Family, Travel / Adventure, Best Life, Home Projects, Meditation, Volunteering

  2. You can either create goals around these areas or just think about general feeling you want related to these areas. Think about (or even journal answers to the following):

    • How do you want to feel?

    • What words best describe the life you want?

    • What do you want to come true?

  3. Find images related to the above!

  4. Arrange your images on your vision board! I recommend arranging them before sticking them on (especially if you’re using glue and a poster board). You may find that you need to cut down some of the images because you have too many for one area or want to add more images for another area that is sparse! Make this your own because it IS your own and meant for you to enjoy!

I’ve made my vision board - Now what?

Once you have your vision board, it’s great to place it somewhere that you will see it every day to help you keep clarity and stay motivated to pursuing your goals and/or the life you are manifesting! This could be hung up in a room such as an office, bedroom, kitchen, etc. or put as a screensaver or background image for digital ones! I personally keep mine in my office where I also have a workout area so that I can see it every morning when I’m working out to help me get in a good mindset for the day ahead!
